School Dress Code

Guidelines for School Dress in All Divisions

The School’s dress code offers flexibility while emphasizing neatness and moderation. Responsibility for compliance is shared by students, parents, and faculty. Clothing that is deemed to be inappropriate or inconsistent with seriousness of purpose is unacceptable.
 
Guidelines for School Dress in All Divisions
  • Articles of clothing must be of the proper size and fit; in good, clean condition; and worn as intended.
  • Trousers for school dress must be plain, hemmed or cuffed, and worn at the waist.
  • Fatigue, neon, denim, or camouflage clothing of any kind is unacceptable.
  • Skirts must be no more than three inches above the top of the kneecap and no longer than mid-calf.
  • Form-fitting clothing is not allowed.
  • Bermuda shorts or skirts may be worn before Parents’ Weekend (October) and after Founders’ Weekend (May).

School Dress Code

  • Primary School


      • Chinos, corduroys, or skirts. Solid-colored leggings are allowed only when worn underneath a skirt. Sweatpants, jeans, leggings, and cargo pants are not allowed.
      • Girls may wear dresses or skirts. They may have prints or patterns but should not have graphic designs or writing. During the winter term, girls should wear tights, leggings, or "bicycle" shorts underneath. 
      • Shirts must have a collar: polo shirts (long or short sleeved), turtlenecks, or button-down shirts. Graphic t-shirts are not allowed.
      • Plain sweaters may be worn. Sweatshirts (crew neck and hooded) are not allowed.
      • Only sneakers are allowed, worn with socks.
      • Accessories should be simple and practical, e.g. a watch or simple headband.
    • Lower and Upper School

      All Students
      • Blazers must be navy blue or black and should be traditional in design.
      • Shirts must have a collar and fully cover the abdomen. Polo shirts are not allowed. Sleeveless blouses and flannel shirts are not permitted.
      • Sweaters may be worn over the shirt and under the blazer, with length not to exceed the length of the blazer.
      • Belts must be worn on all garments with belt loops.
      • Cargo pants are not allowed.
      • Leggings may not be worn alone as pants.
      • Athletic shoes and athletic socks may not be worn during the academic day. Boots may be worn as school shoes during the winter term only. Flat sandals with a heel strap are permitted after Founders’ Weekend.
      • Bermuda shorts may be worn before Upper School Parents’ Weekend (October) and after Founders’ Weekend (May).
      • Moderation is required in the use of cosmetics, jewelry, and in the choice of hairstyle and color.
       
      Girls
      • Navy blue or black blazer
      • Dress slacks, a skirt, or a dress
      • Blouse or shirt with collar and sleeves
      • Leggings or tights may be worn under dresses or skirts for warmth when needed.
      • Flat shoes; for Upper School, maximum heel height of two inches
       
      Boys
      • Navy blue or black blazer
      • Chinos or corduroys with regular pockets
      • Dress shirt with tie; turtlenecks may be worn during the winter term only
      • School shoes with socks

    Dress for Special Occasions

    List of 3 items.

    • Spirit Day Dress

      Spirit Dress is worn on announced Spirit Days, which mark the first day of athletic games each term, or special, color team events. Spirit dress is School Dress that includes a RED or WHITE shirt, slacks, or skirt. A Fay School T-shirt or sweatshirt is permissible.
       
    • Casual Dress

      Casual Dress is worn on special “dress-down” days that are announced during the school year. Clothing is neat and presentable, but may be more relaxed than school dress. Shirts must have collars and be tucked in. Neat jeans are acceptable. Belts, shoes and socks must be worn. T-shirts, sweatpants, and sweatshirts are not allowed.
    • Play Dress

      Play Dress may be permitted on field trips and class outings that involve physical activity or are outdoors. Reasonable athletic or playwear is acceptable. Shoes must be worn.

    • Mooseduds - Gently Used School Clothing

      All parents are invited to check out the selection at Mooseduds, Fay School’s gently-used clothing resale shop. Mooseduds sells Fay dress code clothing for children in Kindergarten through grade nine, including blazers (for boys and girls), dress shirts, skirts, belts, and ties. As your child outgrows his or her school dress clothing, please consider donating these items to Mooseduds.

      Mooseduds also carries a limited supply of Moosegear (gently used sports gear) that varies on a seasonal basis. Mooseduds is open when school is in session on Thursdays from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m.
