Portrait of an Artist

Sally King McBride '00 helps the Metropolitan Museum of Art collect and curate contemporary art from around the world while still finding time to flex her artistic talents as a painter and illustrator.
Even as a Fay sixth grader, Sally King McBride ‘00 knew she wanted to be an artist. Although she was too young to be officially enrolled in the class, “Mr. Claire let me come to some of his Varsity Art classes. I remember painting a sunflower portrait with the ninth graders, and he was so generous in helping me advance.” Today, Sally lives in New York City with her husband Adam and one-year-old son Max. She works as Manager of Friends of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she has worked for the past ten years. She also flexes her artistic talents through her website www.bysallyking.com, where she accepts individually commissioned painting projects.

Sally credits much of her success to the influence and mentoring of teachers whom she met during her school years. In addition to Billy Claire’s support, she recalls how her advisor, art teacher Amy DiBuono Graham ‘82, nurtured the young artists in her classes regardless of how serious they were about the subject: “She supported all her students equally, whether they were dedicated artists or dabblers, and she treated everyone with kindness and warmth.”

After Fay, Sally went onto St. Mark’s and then Brown University, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in art history. She interned at Sotheby’s in Paris but was eventually drawn to New York City, where she started working at the Met as a curator’s assistant, eventually earning her master's degree in art history from Columbia University under The Met’s sponsorship.

Sally's work at the museum, which collects art from around the world, has also given her an appreciation for the global awareness that she developed while at Fay. Sally’s mom, Molly King, worked as Director of the International Student Program during Sally's time at Fay, and that created a special bond between Sally and Fay’s international students. “I had friends from Japan, Mexico, Belgium, Brazil, and South Korea, and it gave me this global awareness at a very young age that has stayed with me,” she notes. “At The Met, we collect works of art across time and geographies, and the fact that I have a point of identification with a number of these cultures is something that I attribute to my time at Fay.”
