English Department Chair

The English Department Chair works with the Assistant Head of School for the Educational Program to define, articulate, and implement the School’s English curriculum from Kindergarten through grade nine. The Department Chair serves as a thought leader in the school community, models and expects high standards of professionalism and accountability, and provides leadership that supports a positive school culture.
 
The English Department Chair is an exemplary teacher; the Chair teaches classes in the department and also serves as an advisor to a small group of students. The Chair provides mentorship and academic leadership to department faculty members, observes teaching, provides regular feedback, and conducts annual faculty teaching evaluations. The Department Chair ensures teachers have the tools and resources to enable each student to be optimally challenged, engaged, and supported in the learning process.
 
The English Department Chair will coach or lead other afternoon duties for one out of three terms and will perform duties to support the School’s residential life program. The Department Chair reports to the Assistant Head of School for the Educational Program and collaborates with three division heads regarding program development and implementation. This is a full-time, school-year position and is eligible for benefits. Campus housing is available.
 
Qualifications:
Candidates must have at least five years of experience teaching at the elementary or middle school level and developing and implementing English curricula across multiple grade levels. A master’s degree in education or a related field is required. Strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively are essential.
 
Responsibilities include:
  • Working with the Assistant Head of School for the Educational Program to develop and implement the K-9 English curriculum, including core skills, content, and assessment
  • Performing regular review and revision of the English curriculum and ensuring that the curriculum is structured to meet the developmental needs of students in grades K-9
  • Providing academic leadership by modeling standards of best instructional practice, including the effective use of technology to enhance instruction
  • Providing oversight of the English Language Program
  • Attending grade-level Team Meetings and Department Chair meetings
  • Working with the Director of Learning Services to address the specific needs of students with learning differences
  • Teaching English classes
  • Coaching or leading afternoon duties for one term and performing residential life duties
  • Supporting and upholding school policies, standards, and deadlines, especially in the areas of student assessment, parent communication, and comment writing.
  • Ensuring that faculty meet the School’s standards of quality for completing academic procedures, including student assignments, lesson plans, effort grades, curriculum documentation, grade books, grades, and comments
  • Observing classroom teaching, providing feedback, conducting annual evaluations, and recommending targeted professional development for faculty
  • Hiring and retaining English department faculty
  • Determining faculty teaching assignments based on the strengths and interests of department personnel and program needs
  • Leading regular Department Meetings to review and discuss pedagogy and curriculum
  • Planning field trips, guest speakers, and special events that best support curriculum goals
  • Managing the department budget
