School Dress Code
Guidelines for School Dress in All Divisions
Fay School’s dress code offers flexibility while emphasizing neatness and moderation. Responsibility for compliance is shared by students, parents, guardians, and faculty. Students are expected to follow these guidelines. If a student requires a modification to the dress code, they and their parent or guardian must speak with a division head, dorm parent, or other trusted adult, and a determination will follow.
Articles of clothing must be of the proper size and fit; in good, clean condition; and worn as intended.
Pants for school dress must be plain, hemmed or cuffed, and worn at the waist.
Skirts and dresses must be no more than three inches above the top of the kneecap.
Chino or khaki shorts may be worn in the Fall and Spring Terms. Shorts must have a minimum 7” inseam.
Leggings or tights must be worn underneath skirts or dresses during Winter Term and may be worn underneath skirts or dresses in Fall and Spring Terms.
Accessories should allow for full participation in school activities, provided they do not create a safety concern.
Fatigue, neon, denim, leather, or camouflage clothing of any kind is not allowed.
Form-fitting clothing is not allowed.
Clothing with offensive, inappropriate, or disruptive images or language is not permitted.
Cosmetic make-up is not permitted for Primary and Lower School students. Nail polish is permitted.
Chinos, corduroys, skirts, or dresses may be worn. Leggings are allowed only when worn underneath a skirt or dress. Sweatpants, jeans, leggings (alone as pants), and cargo pants are not allowed.
Dresses may have prints or patterns but should not have graphic designs or writing.
"Bicycle" shorts should be worn underneath dresses or skirts. During the Winter Term, students must wear tights or leggings under dresses or skirts.
Shirts must have a collar: polo shirts (long or short-sleeved), turtlenecks, or button-down shirts. Graphics or writing on shirts are not allowed.
Sweaters in solid colors may be worn. Sweatshirts are not allowed.
Accessories should be simple and practical, e.g. a watch or simple headband.
Primary Footwear: Sneakers with socks are required for all students. Winter or rain boots may be worn outside in inclement weather.
Collared shirt (button down), blouse, or turtleneck. All shirts must fully cover the abdomen. Sleeveless shirts, polo shirts, and flannel shirts are not permitted. In this option, a tie is required for students who identify as male. Students who identify as female or non-binary may choose to wear a tie.
A crewneck or v-neck sweater may be worn under a blazer. Sweaters must fully cover both shoulders. Collared shirts or turtlenecks must be worn under sweaters.
Pants: Dress slacks, chinos, or corduroy pants. Cargo pants, jeans, and leggings worn alone as pants are not allowed.
Belts are required when wearing pants or skirts with belt loops.
Option 2:
Navy blue or black blazer without patterns.
Collared shirt (button down), blouse, or turtleneck. All shirts must fully cover the abdomen. Sleeveless shirts, polo shirts, and flannel shirts are not permitted. In this option, a tie is required for students who identify as male. Students who identify as female or non-binary may choose to wear a tie.

Dress: Dresses must be no more than three inches above the top of the kneecap.
All dresses must have shoulder straps and a modest neckline.
Leggings or tights must be worn underneath skirts or dresses during Winter Term, and may be worn underneath skirts or dresses in the Fall and Spring Terms.
Lower and Upper School Footwear:
Athletic shoes may not be worn during the academic day. Shoes may have rubber soles, and the top of the shoe should be a solid color, canvas, leather, or patent leather, and be kept reasonably clean. Dress shoes are ones that students would not wear to play sports.
School shoes must be worn with socks. Socks should not have a visible label or brand.
Shoes must have a closed toe and closed back and may not have a heel higher than two inches. Sandals with a heel strap are permitted in the Fall and Spring Terms.
Spirit Dress is worn on announced Spirit Days, which mark the first day of athletic games each term, or on the days of special color team events. Spirit Dress is School Dress that includes a red or white shirt, dress code pants, or skirt. A Fay School t-shirt or sweatshirt is permissible.
Casual dress is worn on special “dress-down” days that are announced during the school year. Clothing is expected to be neat and presentable but may be more relaxed than school dress. Shirts must have collars and be tucked in. Neat jeans are acceptable. Belts, shoes, and socks must be worn. T-shirts, sweatpants, and sweatshirts are not allowed.
Play dress may be permitted on field trips and class outings that involve physical activity or are outdoors. Reasonable athletic or playwear is acceptable. Shoes must be worn.

Mooseduds sells Fay dress code clothing for children in Kindergarten through grade nine, including blazers (for boys and girls), dress shirts, skirts, belts, and ties. As your child outgrows his or her school dress clothing, please consider donating these items to Mooseduds.
Mooseduds also carries a limited supply of Moosegear (gently used sports gear) that varies on a seasonal basis. Mooseduds is open when school is in session on Thursdays from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m.
