Health Office

Your child's health and wellness are a top priority. Fay’s Health Office provides direct care to students in the areas of health, nutrition, hygiene and overall health education. Members of the Health Office staff are trained healthcare professionals who are available throughout the school day, as well as on evenings and weekends for boarding students.

The Health Office facility includes four overnight rooms for boarding students and an examination room.

Our registered nurses work under the supervision of a local doctor and have access to hospitals in the Boston and Worcester areas. Health Office communications to parents are issued as needed to alert the community of instances of preventable health issues and Massachusetts Department of Health advisories.
Fay has partnered with Magnus Health SMR (Student Medical Record) to provide a secure, web-based, management system for student medical information. The Magnus Health Portal is accessible on the Fay Family Portal. To access the portal, please click on MyPortal on the homepage of our website, enter your login credentials, and click the Magnus Health button on the right side of the portal page.

FAQ

List of 7 frequently asked questions.

  • How can I get a copy of my child's medical records?

To obtain access to your child's protected health records from Fay School, please contact Magnus Health SMR customer support by phone at 877-461-6831 or email at service@magnushealthportal.com.
  • When should I keep my child home from school?

Children who are sick cannot perform well at school and will likely spread illness to other children and staff. Please do not send your child to school if he or she has:
    • A fever of 100 degrees or higher in the past 24 hours without fever-reducing medicines
    • Vomiting in the past 24 hours
    • Diarrhea in the past 24 hours
    • Strep throat. Children must have been taking antibiotics for at least 24 hours before returning to school.
    • Head lice including lice eggs (nits)
    • Rash
    • Pinkeye. Children must have been using antibiotic eye drops for 24 hours (which includes 4 doses) before returning to school
If a child becomes ill at school and the teacher or school nurse feels he or she is too sick to benefit from staying at school or may be contagious to other children, parents will be called and asked to collect their child.
  • How can I help prevent germs from spreading?

Please remind children of the following simple precautions that reduce the spread of germs:
    • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the inside of your elbow, not into your bare hands.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
    • Wash hands frequently, especially after coughing or sneezing.
    • Stay home if you're sick, especially with a fever.
Parents, please assess children for flu-like symptoms, keep children home if they are sick, and consult with your pediatrician as appropriate.
  • What happens if a student gets sick while at school?

Students who are sick are taken to Fay's Health Office. If a student is too ill to return to class or the dorm, he or she will remain in the Health Office. Parents of day students will be contacted and asked to take them home or to their family doctor. Boarding students may remain under observation in one of the overnight rooms and, if necessary, will be taken to Fay’s local doctor for further examination. If warranted, we may request that a local guardian (or local emergency contact) pick up the student until well enough to return to school.
  • How is medication administered to students?

All student medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines, and herbal supplements, must be handed into the Health Office. Prescription medications will be administered by a member of Fay's nursing staff. All prescription medications require a medication order from the prescriber.
  • What medication does the Health Office keep on hand?

The Health Office stocks a variety of over the counter medications such as Tylenol, Advil, Benadryl, and multiple cough and cold medications which may be administered if parent permission to do so is indicated on the Health Form.
  • When is the Health Office open?

Our Health Office is open and staffed to meet the needs of our boarding and day students:

    Monday - Friday: 7:00 a.m. through 10:00 p.m.
    Saturday - Sunday: 11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Information for Boarding Students

  • Health Services for Boarding Students

The Health Office provides extended hours to meet the needs of our boarding students. The office is staffed seven days a week, with on-call nurses available when the office itself is closed.

If a boarding student becomes ill during the night, they should contact their dorm parent on duty who will contact the on-call registered nurse if needed. During regular hours, boarding students who are feeling ill should go to the Health Office and may remain for observation and to rest if recommended to do so by the nursing staff. If appropriate, boarding students may remain under observation in one of the overnight rooms. If necessary, your child will be taken to Fay's local doctor for further examination. We will notify parents if their child is ill for more than a day or has required a visit to the doctor.

  • Doctor Appointments

Parents of boarding students are strongly encouraged to schedule routine health care for their children while at home.
Some specialist appointments can be arranged by Fay with a local provider if required. The school’s Health Office driver will transport students who need medical services off campus, and the charges will be billed to the student's account.
