Ninth Grade Service Learning Sparks a New Tutoring Program
This fall, ninth graders explored the idea of Dedicated Service through a new lens: What lasting contribution could they leave behind as a legacy for the Fay community?
Maxwell D. ’25 and Sean L. ’25 quickly realized that they had a complementary idea for a student-run academic support program, and they spent their ninth grade year successfully launching the program, which they called SPARK (Students Providing Academic Resources and Knowledge).
In addition to seeking extra help from their teachers, Upper School students can now reach out to SPARK and be paired with a student tutor approved by faculty for their specific subject. After months of planning, and support from Assistant Head of School for the Educational Program Judi O’Brien and Service Learning Coordinator Christina Berthelsen, Max and Sean launched SPARK at Upper School Morning Meeting and have been pleased with the response from students and faculty. Sean and Max are proud of the program and are excited to see where their successors will take it. “I believe that SPARK will continue to grow and adapt while staying true to its core mission of supporting Fay students,” says Max.
