Rooted in Action

On April 22, students across campus came together for a day dedicated to environmental awareness and action. The schedule was filled with interactive and inspiring activities, including a climate change debate, workshops on sustainable fashion and clothing repair, scavenger hunts, nature mandala creations, and campus beautification efforts, where students planted greenery and collected litter to help restore their surroundings.

Service to others was a meaningful part of the day as Upper School students took time to mentor Fay’s youngest learners, guiding them through afternoon activities and helping them brainstorm and write personal intentions for making a positive impact on the environment, which were then added to the Earth Day Pledge Wall. Upper Schoolers also volunteered their time to build benches made from recycled materials for the Southborough Department of Public Works. As Head of School Susanna Waters noted in her opening remarks, "On Earth Day, we often take care of what’s close to us- picking up litter, planting flowers and trees, tending gardens, thrifting, eating vegetarian, turning off the lights, recycling more intentionally, and becoming civically engaged by campaigning for better management of local resources. That is all vitally important, because it builds empathy, understanding, and interest amongst the futurists, the engineers, the policy makers, and other big changemakers with agency on a global scale."

The day culminated in a vibrant all-school gathering, where students showcased original poetry created in workshops throughout the morning, a beautiful musical performance of "From the Seed in the Ground" by Primary students, and a collaborative Earth Day mural, celebrating our students' shared commitment to a more sustainable future.
