Into the Rainforest

Over the past few weeks, Kindergarten students have been exploring the rainforest habitat, learning about toucans, frogs, spider monkeys, and sloths. Building on their earlier studies of the Arctic and ocean habitats, they began by examining images of the rainforest, identifying key similarities and differences compared to the environments they had previously studied.

Students explored the different layers of the rainforest: the humid forest floor, the shrub- and bush-filled understory, the lively canopy bursting with a diverse array of plants and animals, and the emergent layer of towering trees. They dedicated a day to each layer, learning about the unique plants and animals that inhabit it. Students also discussed valuable resources humans gather from each layer, such as minerals used in makeup, nuts and fruits for food, and plants that can be used to create medicines. After studying each layer, students chose a plant or animal native to that part of the rainforest. They created colorful drawings, which they added to a rainforest mural on display in the hallway.

Students took particular interest in the Blue Morpho Butterfly, a magnificent butterfly with a wingspan of 5 to 8 inches that lives in the rainforests of Central and South America. Inspired by this insect, they set up an entomology lab in the dramatic play area, deepening their exploration of rainforest creatures. They also created beautiful direct drawings of the colorful toucan, a bird known for its striking beak and life high in the rainforest canopies.

Throughout their habitat studies this term, the kindergarteners have been learning about the difference between climate and weather, understanding that while different regions may sometimes experience similar weather, their overall climates can be very different. They also explored the critical role humans play in both harming and protecting ecosystems. Students learned about deforestation and how it disrupts animal habitats in the rainforest. They discussed ways to balance human needs with environmental protection, including making planet-friendly choices such as walking when possible, driving electric vehicles, and reducing waste through recycling and reuse.
