"Farther Than The Moon" is the One School, One Book Selection

This week, Lower School students gathered for one of the most eagerly anticipated morning meetings of the school year, the announcement of the 2024 One School, One Book selection. This year’s choice is Farther Than The Moon by Lindsey Lackey. One School, One Book is a beloved annual tradition where all students, teachers, and parents in Fay's Lower School read the same book and reflect on its themes and message together.

Farther Than The Moon is the story of Houston Stewart, a thirteen-year-old boy who dreams of becoming an astronaut. When he is accepted to the Junior Astronaut Recruitment Program, he realizes that it will mean leaving his younger brother Robbie, who has cerebral palsy and epilepsy, behind. As Houston embarks on this new adventure, it underscores for him how different Robbie's opportunities may be, so Houston starts to visualize a new plan of action that will allow both brothers to achieve their dreams of space travel.

Called "a remarkable and heartfelt story that is as fun and gripping as it is profoundly moving" by #1 New York Times-bestselling author Dan Gemeinhart, this is a captivating read for aspiring astronauts and scientists.

There is something powerful about a shared reading experience, and from now until the beginning of March, students will be reading Farther Than The Moon aloud at home every night with their families. Students will also spend time talking about and exploring the book in class and discussing its themes as a Lower School community at lunch every day. To add to the fun, "celebrity" guests will host Zoom readings of the chapter every Thursday night! As families approach the end of the book, parents and guardians will also have an opportunity to join in the discussion. On Thursday, February 15, at 8:15 a.m. in the Root Meeting Room, parents can join Head of Lower School Kaitlyn Cronin to discuss the text and gain some new insights into the book over a cup of coffee! Finally, the Lower School community can look forward to welcoming author Lindsey Lackey to campus at the end of the Winter Term!
