Athletic Trainers

Fay's Athletic Department includes two athletic trainers on staff who work with coaches and athletes to ensure every student's safety and well-being. The Steward Training Room is located inside Harlow Gymnasium on the concourse level and is open Monday-Friday 2:00 - 6:00 p.m., and weekends of home games.

Fay is now an affiliate member of Boston Children's Hospital's Sports Medicine Division. Click here to see their services. Their FasTrac program can get you the earliest available sports medicine appointment, usually within 24 hours. Click here for the link to download the app.

Fay’s athletic trainers follow RICE protocol for most minor sports-related injuries. RICE stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation:

Rest - Take a break from the activity that caused the injury.
Ice - Use cold packs for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day. Do not apply ice directly to the skin.
Compression - To prevent additional swelling and blood loss, wear an ace wrap or elastic compression bandage.
Elevation - To reduce swelling, recline when you rest, and put your leg up higher than your heart.

If your child suffers a concussion

Recommendations
  • Your child should rest during recovery; screen time should be limited and loud noises avoided.
  • Full rest should not exceed 72 hours, and children should not return to sports unless they are symptom-free for 7 days and have completed a return to play protocol.
  • Students will be supported both in the classroom and on the sports field while recovering from a concussion.

Sway - At the start of each school year every student in grades 5-9 is concussion baseline tested using Sway. Sway is a heavily researched concussion assessment tool. During the year, if a student is suspected of having a concussion we are able to re-test them and compare their results to the previous baseline test and get a better understanding of their injury.
