Primary and Lower School Reading Specialist

Description:
The Reading Specialist collaborates with colleagues within the Learning Services Department and the Primary School and Lower School divisions, grades K-6. This teacher provides individual and small group reading support to students with emerging and documented learning differences and reports to the Director of Learning Services. The Reading Specialist will coach or lead other afternoon student activities for two terms. This position is full-time with benefits. On-campus housing may be available.
 
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have at least three years of teaching experience and hold a master’s degree in education with a focus on literacy or reading instruction. To effectively support students’ literacy development, the Reading Specialist must have a deep knowledge of research-based practices in reading instruction, dyslexia intervention, and literacy assessment.
 
Responsibilities include:
  • Supporting the mission, philosophy, and core values of the School
  • Demonstrating academic excellence through a knowledge of Fay’s core curriculum
  • Partnering with the Director of Learning Services and teachers to identify emerging student support needs and implement recommendations from individual neuropsychological evaluations
  • Collaborating on the writing of and adhering to individualized learning profiles and managing appropriate school-based accommodations
  • Delivering strategy-based individual reading and academic support to students
  • Providing information to teachers to understand students’ learning profiles; supporting teachers with observational data about students’ learning
  • Attending grade-level team meetings and all required meetings of the faculty and the Learning Services Department
