The Foundation for a Meaningful Life
Kindergarten - Grade 9 in Southborough, MA

Grammar and Composition

In this course, students review previously acquired grammatical structures, learn new structures, and focus on proper usage and application of skills. Students are expected to apply their knowledge in a consistent manner, both independently and through prompts on written work and during in-class discussions. As the course progresses, students write and speak in an increasingly grammatically correct fashion, and they begin to express themselves with greater confidence and precision.

Students compose increasingly complex paragraphs and essays, focusing on mastering cohesive and unified paragraphs by including support for the main idea through examples and details. Though students spend time practicing descriptive and narrative writing skills, the course emphasis is on reinforcement and mastery of persuasive and expository writing and gathering evidence to support a thesis. Students spend time on the reinforcement and mastery of grammar structures as they learn more complex structures throughout the year. Activities include practice and application of skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. By the end of this course, students will have mastered the critical points of English grammar and can express themselves with clarity and precision both orally and in writing.
