With red and white “FAY” t-shirts and plenty of school spirit, Fay students celebrated the start to the fall athletics season on Wednesday, September 19. This fall, students in grades five through nine are playing eight different sports on 18 different teams: soccer, cross country, field hockey, volleyball, and football, as well as intramural tennis, golf, and fitness.
The games began on Wednesday afternoon, with girls varsity soccer winning their opener against Applewild and seven different Fay players scoring goals during the course of the game. Boys varsity soccer also won their opener against Groton School by a score of 4-1. Junior varsity field hockey celebrated a 2-1 win over Dedham Country Day School, while varsity field hockey lost 5-4 in a close game against Buckingham Browne & Nichols, and junior varsity boys soccer lost their opener to the Meadowbrook boys varsity team.
Fay’s cross country team got off to a strong start with two victories against Hillside and Applewild. Co-captain Matt Thalmann '14 won the 1.93 mile race in 12:06, a new course record for Fay's home course. Seventh grader Sally Lee also took first place, running a tactical race and moving her way up through the pack over the latter half of the course.
Meanwhile, varsity field hockey had an impressive start to their season with an undefeated showing at the Junior Prep School Field Hockey Round-Robin at Pomfret School on Sunday, September 16. Fay tied Rumsey Hall and Pomfret and posted back-to-back, 3-0 wins over Burrillville School and Pine Point Academy. In total, Fay outscored their tournament opponents 8-2. Returning varsity players Morgan Smith and Meg Fearey each scored three goals during the day. Eighth grade forwards Sophie Ruzecki and Gabby McCarthy also scored. Fay's defense was solid and communicative, led by ninth grade goalie Abbie Klein, who had 13 saves during the tournament.
Congratulations to all Fay athletes on an exciting start to the fall season!
