Last Wednesday, January 4, longtime Fay School faculty member Dick Upjohn passed away at the age of 82. On Wednesday, January 11, Fay’s faculty, staff, and students honored his memory by donning his favorite attire: plaid.

In addition to his fabulous fashion sense, Mr. Upjohn was known for his passion for teaching ancient history (which he did from 1960 until his retirement in 1997), his love for Fay School, his environmental activism in Southborough, his devotion to his family, his loyalty to his friends, his love for hiking, bicycling, and the outdoors, his integrity, and his sense of humor.

Even after he retired in 1997, Mr. Upjohn continued to ride his bicycle to Fay each day to perform a variety of “schoolmaster” tasks, such as working in the Learning Center, overseeing Upper School study halls, and running a basketball club, because he enjoyed getting to know students and staying connected to Fay.

After the sadness of losing an integral member of our community, “Plaid Day” enabled the Fay School community to reminisce with joy and laughter – a fitting way to celebrate our beloved Mr. Upjohn!
