Global Showcase

Each year, fourth graders in Ward Russell’s social studies class embark on a global adventure, “traveling” the world to explore the cuisine, culture, economy, and unique geography of different countries. At each stop, students conduct research to co-create a presentation that captures both the hard facts and the distinct cultural flavor of each destination. This year’s journey has taken them to Sweden (birthplaces of the Swedish meatball), India to explore a nationwide obsession with cricket, and New Zealand to experience a traditional Powhiri welcoming ceremony. Their journey culminates in the Travel Expo, where families, friends, and fellow Lower School students visit student-hosted tables, each representing a different country, to sample traditional foods, learn about cultural celebrations, and experience the unique pastimes of far-flung countries.

Students from all three fourth-grade sections teamed up to create interactive displays about the countries they had studied. Each group designed a table featuring a slideshow, a poster board, an artifact representing their country, and a takeaway pamphlet with key facts. At the Philippines table, students explained the significance of their country’s flag and described the popularity of lechon as a traditional delicacy. Moving on to the France table, visitors could sample a sweet macaron, test real French perfume, and learn about the vibrant Lemon Festival held every February. The expo successfully brought families and students together to celebrate their hard work and share their curiosity about the world.
