Glamping Off the Grid: Kendra Surette ’11

Tucked away on fourteen secluded acres in the Maine woods is a cozy cabin that offers the ultimate off-the-grid escape, as long as your idea of getting back to nature includes crackling fire pits, sheepskin throws, and a sauna under the stars.
Welcome to Nordic House, a Scandinavian-inspired eco-haven dreamed up and brought to life by Kendra Surette and her fiancé, Cyrus Hamer.

The idea behind Nordic House came from Kendra’s frustration with the ski-and-stay options. It seemed that ski weekends had to be booked months in advance, with the choices ranging from a massive ski house that sleeps 18 to a grungy room in an outdated mountain hotel. “We wanted a spot that felt like you could plan a last-minute weekend getaway or chase a snowstorm but still have all the comforts of the modern day.”

In 2022, Kendra and Cyrus purchased fourteen acres of land in Greenwood, Maine, with 1,000 feet of waterfront on South Pond. A year later, they broke ground on their first cabin. Today, the property features three thoughtfully designed cabins, each tucked into its own secluded setting. Every cabin includes two sleeping areas, a walk-in rain shower, a wood-burning stove, a kitchenette, a gas fire pit on the deck, and a private hot tub. “It’s everything that you want in a luxury hotel, but you have your own space and the ability to disconnect.” The property operates on a ghost concierge model, allowing guests to enjoy uninterrupted solitude while having on-demand access to essentials, such as fresh firewood or an extra blanket—no check-in desk required.

When they purchased the land, it was completely raw, with no power or running water, and Kendra admits that if she had known what an undertaking the construction process would be, they might not have done it. However, three years later, she knows that the work they invested in creating exactly what they envisioned was worth it. Already, Nordic House has hosted weddings, engagements, and other milestone moments, which Kendra is thrilled to be a part of. “It's awesome to know that we've built a place that feels so special that someone would want to have one of their big life moments there.”

The most important upcoming event at Nordic House will be the June 2026 wedding of Kendra and Cyrus, who are excited to host their wedding at the place that they worked so hard to build together.
