Navigating AI at Fay

Navigating AI at Fay: Safety, Sustainability, and Human-Centered Learning

At Fay School, we are dedicated to helping each child recognize and develop their intellectual, emotional, and social capabilities within a safe and supportive community. As artificial intelligence reshapes the educational landscape, we are actively examining how teachers teach and students learn with AI, navigating this dynamic intersection with intentionality, care, and clarity.

Our approach to artificial intelligence is anchored directly in Fay’s five core values: Academic Excellence, Earnest Effort, Honorable Conduct, Dedicated Service, and Wellness of Mind, Body, and Spirit. Guided by our mission and educational philosophy, we believe that technology should serve human potential, not replace it. We remain committed to cultivating adaptable, inquisitive, analytically minded, and distinctively creative learners who embrace productive struggle, take intellectual risks, and discover their full potential.

In both classroom pedagogy and administrative practice, we focus on intentionality over novelty. As we iterate our policies and design learning environments that cultivate intrinsic motivation, we evaluate decisions through three guiding questions:
  1. How do we protect and elevate the core of teaching and learning in the age of AI?
  2. How can the learning experience be improved by the intersection of technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge?
  3. How do we ensure that our use of technology reinforces earnest effort, preserves authentic human connection, and prepares our students to lead productive and fulfilling lives?
As we evolve our AI framework in consultation with educators, students, families, and current research, our decisions are grounded in three institutional commitments:

  • Foundational Safety & Data Privacy: We safeguard student identity and digital well-being. We uphold strict data privacy standards to protect student information and maintain monitored, age-appropriate digital environments.
  • Academic Integrity & Earnest Effort: Rooted in our tradition of honorable conduct, we establish clear boundaries in each division to ensure AI is not used as a substitute for original thought, process-oriented learning, or foundational skills. We teach students how to engage ethically with modern tools while honoring the role of academic challenge and productive struggle.
  • Environmental & Ethical Stewardship: True to our commitment to dedicated service and the well-being of our world, we examine the real-world ecological footprint of digital infrastructure. We guide students to weigh the energy, resource, and privacy tradeoffs of emerging technologies alongside their utility.
Behind these commitments is a deliberate narrative of growth. We are actively exploring both the short-term and long-term opportunities and challenges AI presents to students and schools. For our faculty, administrators and staff this means leveraging their professional expertise to thoughtfully apply AI to streamline institutional processes and enrich instructional design, clearing greater space for what matters most: direct human connection and deep relational teaching.
