  • American Sign Language: 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. (Gr. 3-4)

    This fun and interactive class will combine traditional teaching methods with engaging games as students learn ASL each week. Participants will learn to sign colors, letters and words, members of their family, animals, things in a classroom and concepts in time to have conversations with one another in sign language.

  • Karate: 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. (K-Gr. 1)

    As a continuation of the Fall term or new to first time participants, Fourth-Degree Black Belt and certified instructor Sensei Lynn Reynolds returns to FAS to help children gain self-esteem as they learn the kenpo curriculum. Relays, games and karate fundamentals lead to improved strength, flexibility and manipulative skills. As the children progress, these activities adapt to further develop physical strength, coordination, balance, mental focus, personal confidence and a spirit of group cooperation. Students advance as quickly as they are able to learn and perform the skills for their rank. New and experienced students are welcome. No uniform is required - students should come in comfortable athletic clothing.

    Offered by STEM Beginnings, STEM is Fun for Kids is a fun-filled experience that encourages learning curiosity in a hands-on way. Kids are given challenges that allow them to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math concepts using a variety of tools and techniques: from simple experiments, building challenges, team-based activities, analytical projects, and fun games!

    LEGO Wonders of the World will both captivate your child’s imagination as well as teach them about new and old engineering accomplishments, how they work, and how they were built.
    A different theme will be introduced each week and children will be encouraged to think “outside the box”, experiment, test, and improve on their solutions.  
    Class themes include but are not limited to the following :Pyramids of Giza, The Great Wall of China, The Panama Canal, Roman Colosseum, Hoover Dam, Golden Gate Bridge, Empire State Building and the Apollo Moon Landing.

    NEW PLACES TO VISIT FOR THE WINTER TERM!
    Pack your bags and join us as we travel around the world! Each week, students will travel to a new country and learn about its culture. Based around the country they’re visiting that week, students will read stories, play games, create art projects, sample different foods, and listen to the local music. So buckle up and get ready for an adventure!

    This class will teach your child self-defense, self-confidence and discipline in a fun, safe and inclusive environment. We will learn different punches and kicks, boxing drills, bag work, non-contact sparring and work on core strength. We will end each class with healthy goals and meditation with our very own H2K Bu-Dog.

    Students are taught using a curriculum integrating traditional method books and computer software to allow students to learn at their own pace. Daily practice at home is expected and is essential to student progress. Students in this club are encouraged to register each for the full 2018-19 academic year as a recital is scheduled at the end of the academic year.

    Through the study of artifacts the past comes alive for students participating in this club. As they handle, analyze, and discuss and/or research the artifacts in the kits, it becomes easier for them to connect with people from the past and to understand that history is the story of individuals caught up in the events of their time period.

    In this Hand Sewing Class, you will learn different hand stitches, threading and knotting while completing your own creations. Projects will include button sewing, a little stuffed mouse in a tin and even sewing circuits to create a project that lights up! Come try your hand at learning a skill you will use for the rest of your life. No experience necessary, beginners welcome.

    In celebrating the centennial of Leonard Bernstein's birth, we will hear music from Candide,West Side Story, and historic Young People's Concerts with the NY Philharmonic. Through stories and games, we will continue learning to play the violin in Suzuki and Essential Elements. Please be sure that your child has the right size violin before club begins. At least one year of previous violin study is recommended for this continuing group. Students in this club are encouraged to register each for the full 2018-19 academic year as a recital is scheduled at the end of the academic year.

    NEW ADVENTURES FOR THE WINTER SESSION!

    Calling all little nature enthusiasts!  Join us as we head outdoors to explore the world around us. From activities like nature walks and observations, to creating jewelry and other fun craft projects, we will work to make the most of the beautiful winter weather!

  • LEGO Simple and Motorized Machines: 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. (Gr. 3 & 4)

    Using proven curriculum students will build simple and motorized machines learning about levers, pulleys, measurements, gear ratios, and much more.  Children work in small groups to first build mechanisms based on lesson instructions and when familiar with the challenge children will be asked to improve on the design. Students will investigate the principles of simple machines, mechanisms, and structures; experiment with balanced and unbalanced forces and friction; measure distance, time, speed, and weight; and much more. Every class is different and challenges encourage critical thinking.

    An imaginative fitness class combining elements of kickboxing, tumbling, and many obstacle courses. Each class will engage your child on a journey through their first Ninja Academy! This class provides a fun and exciting atmosphere while building basic strength, agility, and self-control skills.
