Measuring Irregular Objects

Students in Janet Drake’s Advanced Geometry class have been putting the final touches on their irregular objects projects. The challenge for this project was to find an irregular, three-dimensional object and to measure its surface area and volume using formulae studied in class as well as creative problem-solving when necessary.

Students selected a wide variety of objects from a stuffed animal to a violin and a rough-hewn stone bench on the Fay campus. Students were required to take photos of their objects, make a hand drawing to scale, calculate the surface area and volume, and then write a detailed report including their methodology and calculations. The final step was to create a digital rendering of the object using software such as TinkerCAD and pull it all together into a slideshow presentation. Technology has made the final products of these projects impressive. “One student embedded a video of her object into her slide show while others students are actually creating 3D images of their objects,” says Janet. “The use of technology makes the quality of these projects phenomenal!”
