Practicing Language at Lunch

During Upper School lunch, students have the opportunity to practice more than their table manners. At two lunch periods during the two week rotation, the World Languages Department is hosting language tables where students can elect to join a table and practice their French, Spanish, Latin, or Chinese. Language tables give Upper School students the opportunity to learn, practice, or simply use their language skills in a social setting. “Our hope is that students of varying language levels and perspectives will join,” says World Languages Department Chair Kara Mertz. “We focus on basic vocabulary from the napkins and utensils to practicing ordering food,” she says. Whether a student is a language student or a heritage speaker, language tables provide them with the opportunity to share and connect with one another over their enthusiasm for language.
