Where is Claude Monet?

Kindergarten students have been learning directional vocabulary and elementary programming in French by coding bee-shaped robots (called BeeBots) to navigate through a large grid on the floor with commands like à droite or en avant

The BeeBot’s name is Claude l’abeille, which translates to Claude the bee. The Kindergarten students are helping Claude travel from his home on a mission to gather pollen. Students are not only practicing their directional vocabulary but also their colors as they select different color flowers on a spinning wheel for him to travel to. Primary World Languages teacher Erin Overstreet works French phrases into each of Claude’s adventures to build the students’ comprehension skills. On his next adventure, Claude traveled from his house to a location in town. The students chose whether they would travel to the playground, supermarket, school, or library. Then, in French, they plotted out how many spaces he must move à droiteà gaucheen avant, or en arrierre to reach his location. Then they programmed the BeeBot to make the trip, turning and switching directions when appropriate. Most recently, Kindergarten students connected Claude l’abeille to their study of the artist Claude Monet. They guided BeeBot Claude through Claude Monet’s garden in Giverny as they searched for him at his favorite spots to paint. After searching through the lavender and traveling by the waterlilies, Claude was finally found at his favorite bridge, Le Pont Japonais
