Announcing One School, One Book!

Daintry Zaterka
This year’s One School, One Book selection, The Elephant in the Room by Holly Goldberg Sloan, was unveiled at this morning’s Lower School Morning Meeting. One of the highlights of the Lower School calendar, One School, One Book is an opportunity for all students, teachers, and parents in the Lower School to take time to read the same book and reflect on its themes and message.

The Elephant in the Room brings together an unlikely cast of characters: Sila, a young girl desperately missing her mother in Turkey, her autistic friend Mateo, a widowed lottery winner, and a rescued circus elephant named Veda. The story highlights the important connections between humans and animals and the sustaining power of love, friendship, and hope.

There is something powerful about a shared reading experience, and from now until the beginning of March, students will be reading The Elephant in the Room aloud at home every night with their families. Students will also spend time talking about and exploring the book in class and discussing its themes as a Lower School community at lunch every day. As families approach the end of the book, parents will have an opportunity to join in the discussion! On Thursday, February 17 at 11:00 a.m.parents can join English Department Chair Joe Mendes, Director of the Educational Program Julie Porrazzo, and Head of Lower School Kaitlyn Cronin to discuss the text and share ideas and insights on Zoom. Please click here to learn more about this year’s Lower School One School, One Book reading experience.
