American History

International students in the English Language Program are offered American history as part of their cultural immersion and as a means to introduce the skills and concepts necessary to transition into the mainstream curriculum. This is a survey course covering the establishment of the thirteen colonies through the emergence of the United States as a world power in the twentieth century.

As students explore the topics, they develop an understanding of the historical thinking concepts of significance, perspective, context, and cause and effect as they learn about the social, political, and economic development of the United States. Through the use of primary and secondary sources, maps, timelines, class discussions and debates, regular essay writing, and frequent tests, students learn the skills of information gathering and historical analysis.
