Reading

In this course, students practice the skills of determining word meaning from context, extracting information, deducing meaning from text, understanding implied ideas, and identifying main idea and supporting details. Students also pursue enhanced word building and vocabulary improvement. Reading selections are longer and more challenging. Students learn skills such as skimming, scanning, and making inferences and predictions. Discussion of texts and written responses are an important part of this course. Conversations and writing assignments based on plot elements provide students with opportunities to strengthen critical analysis and comprehension skills.
