Fay Faculty Published in "Independent Teacher" Journal
Congratulations to Lainie Schuster, Head of Lower School, and Julie Porrazzo, Director of the Educational Program, on the publication of their article about Fay’s One School, One Book program in Independent Teacher. Independent Teacher is an electronic journal that publishes articles on curriculum and pedagogy for independent school educators.
While many schools have an all-school read, Fay’s One School, One Book is truly a community event. Lainie and Julie discuss in detail how cross-curricular connections and parental involvement create a unique experience in their article, “Building Community and Extending the Conversation Beyond the Classroom.”
The announcement of the One School, One Book selection is a highly anticipated event in the Lower School calendar. For several weeks, the entire community - students, teachers, and parents - set aside time to read the book aloud together each night and discuss its themes and messages.
The discussions and conversations that families have at home are further enriched by time spent in class discussing the book and learning about its context. Lower School students also discuss one or two ideas raised in their reading as a community at lunch each day. Throughout the reading experience, there are several opportunities for parents to participate in roundtable discussions facilitated by students and faculty.
To learn more about how the One School, One Book shared reading experience encourages engagement, empathy, collaboration, and community, you can read Lainie and Julie’s article here.
