Helping Kids Find Balance in a Digital World

Next week, the Fay community is hosting several screenings of the award-winning documentary Screenagers, which examines the real impact of a technology-saturated culture on kids’ social and emotional development. The film also highlights the struggle that many families face in monitoring and limiting screen time and provides practical advice for navigating those issues. On Monday, September 17, at 7:00 pm. the Fay parent community will have the opportunity to view Screenagers in Harris Theater. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with Head of Lower School Lainie Schuster, Head of Upper School Sarah Remsberg, Director of the Educational Program Julie Porrazzo, Director of Counseling Programs Vi-Anne Brown, and Wellness Department Chair Heidi Qua. On Tuesday, September 18, students in grades 5-9 will be screening an edited version of the film and discussing it in their advisory/homevisory groups. The hope is that the film and discussion opportunities will spark continued conversations throughout the year about technology and its role in kids’ daily lives. “When it comes to technology, there is something new every day and there is no way that kids or parents are going to have all the answers,” notes Head of Lower School Lainie Schuster. “Rather, this is about encouraging kids to respond to technology with integrity, honesty, and openness. That’s what’s going to make them good students and good citizens and it’s why we need to start these conversations early.”
